Jailed Ethiopian journalist Reeyot Alemu named winner of 2013
Imprisoned Ethiopian journalist Reeyot Alemu has been named the winner of the 2013 UNESCO-Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize.
Reeyot Alemu, 32, is an internationally honored female journalist who has been an outspoken critic of the Ethiopian government’s human rights violations. She was arrested 2 years ago by the Ethiopian government and sentenced to 14 years in prison. Even though Reeyot Alemu’s charges have been reduced to 5 years, there is serious concern about her health and allegations of mistreatment while she is incarcerated. Some months ago Reeyot was placed in solitary confinement for 2weeks. A tumor in her breast remains untreated because she is denied access to medical care. In July 2013, a delegation of the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights was denied access to Kaliti prison to meet with Reeyot Alemu.

AU to discuss ICC trials of Kenyan leaders Summit that is likely to be held

Summit that is likely to be held in October comes amid accusations that the Hague-based court is singling out Africans.

African leaders are to hold a special summit next month amid growing opposition to the crimes against humanity trials of Kenya's leadership at the International Criminal Court (ICC), officials have said.
The African Union (AU) has accused the Hague-based ICC of singling out Africans for prosecution and has previously called for the court to drop the Kenya cases.
The AU now wants the trials of the Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and Vice President William Ruto shifted to Kenya.
Though diplomats say that it is unlikely that all 34 AU-member states who are ICC members will take a common position and stage a mass pullout from the organisation, officials say that option will be a topic for discussion.

Words from a prisoner of conscience at Kaliti – Andualem Aragie -Prisoner of Conscience From Kaliti Prison (a house of punishment)

First of all, may my respectful and brotherly greetings reach you all wherever you may be!
I wish to express my gratitude to you all for not succumbing to the ruling regime’s propaganda avalanche that describes me as being
Instead, you have realized that my imprisonment and that of my friends here is a symbol of the larger imprisonment of the Ethiopian people and you have become a clear and powerful expression of my stifled voice. I am grateful to you for keeping me in your thoughts and for giving such a precious value to the small sacrifice that I am making.
